Recycling Tennis Balls for a Greener Future
Tennis is a magnificent sport, except for one unknown flaw. It results in tremendous environmental damage.
Over 130 million balls are thrown away each year in the US alone. This tremendous amount of balls ultimately ends its journey in landfills, with each ball taking about 400 years to decompose. That equates to tens of millions of pounds of waste contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
Most players don’t realize the immense magnitude of their actions. Even for those who are aware, there is no free, easy, nor accessible way to recycle tennis balls. After all, there’s not much to do with used tennis balls after they're no good, right?
Or is there?
In January 2020, Ritali Jain founded Evergreen Tennis, a youth-led organization determined to eliminate the environmental harms of tennis. Our goal is to increase awareness about the importance of recycling tennis balls so that they aren’t destined to end up in landfills. We facilitate the recycling and collection process for tennis balls so that they can be repurposed to add to the beauty of our sport, for instance, to provide the material for building tennis courts and playgrounds.
In addition, our hope is to spread the "luv" of tennis to everyone. We happily collect fair equipment and ship it across the world to those who don't have the opportunity to play. Contact us to donate, volunteer, and lead the future of tennis.
With our green mission, everyone wins!
